montauk.adventure
we had a wonderful july 4th weekend adventure exploring montauk which (for those of you who dont know) is at the very end of long island. the adventure begins with the journey as we took none other than the vehicle of my son's dreams, the double decker diesel train also known as the "cannonball". Jamaica station to montauk in just over a couple hours which he ended up sleeping most of the way & I got to actually enjoy my book which gave me an interesting insight into the history of the area. Montauk was actually consider a sacred site for many of the tribes of Long Island with Montauk Point being a very important burial site as it is the eastern most point to meet the rising sun.
since we were on foot, we brought an extra set of wheels with us which can in very handy during our wanderings and encounters with sea creatures and snow cones...
amazing sunsets..... sea birds....
surely the land of fisherman, pirate stories and sand castle building......
bold colors and sunshine.....
vistas and sailing vessels.....
salty air and bare feet.....
and something to discover around every corner.....these are the bits that get us through those long winter months... the promise of these salt water adventures..... here's to the next one!

on the worktable today....
mounting some new altered photo prints on some remnant wood pieces, experimenting with presentation ideas....
& i've been sewing through this painting & playing around. A stretched canvas makes for a great embroidery hoop! (with the exception of stretcher bar placement). Had I not chosen a canvas that I have painted over numerous times i'd bet this concept would be alot easier. we'll see where this goes....love to be inspired!

news from the coney island mermaid parade.....
yesterday was the annual coney island mermaid parade, so we braved the elements & headed for the boardwalk!
we were not disappointed. coney island is a place like no other, creating an interesting mythology for themselves with a touch of kitsch, rock and roll, circus, history, sea creatures, carnival and a touch of, well, the unexpected. you never know what you'll find in these parts, but you can be sure that it will be fun....
here are the cyclone girls, who had a little choreographed number to share.... (i love the use of cd's as wheels on their roller coaster cars!)
lots of folks not very happy about proposed redevelopment coney island, you can read all about it here.
i'll just let the rest of the images speak for themselves.....

my little pirate

filled my memory card in the first hour so I didnt get to shoot any photos in the aquarium which was also a bunch of fun... the jellyfish were AMAZING! all for another day I guess....a fun day indeed. (that is until i hit the traffic heading home...)
if you live in the NY area, get to coney island this summer while it still has it's gritty charm!!! who knows what it will look like next year...
